Previously, if you wanted access to IMS documentation in IBM Knowledge Center, you needed an Internet connection. Or, if you were using IMS manuals in PDF format, you might have found it inconvenient to have your search results limited to one PDF manual instead of being able to search across all IMS content, especially when you weren’t sure which manual contained the answer to your question.
With the release of Knowledge Center Installer, you can now download and install documentation for IMS 15, 14, and 13 to a locally hosted IBM Knowledge Center (local KC) for local access. Using IMS documentation in local KC provides you with the following benefits:
- The ability to install documentation of multiple products into one single local KC on your workstation.
- Access to the local KC that is hosted on your intranet server.
- Access to documentation in KC without the need for Internet connection.
- Access from Eclipse applications to installed product documentation.
How can I download and install IMS documentation in a local KC?
IMS documentation is provided in local KC to facilitate app development and database definition tasks using IMS Explorer, which is a component of IMS Enterprise Suite and is delivered through an Eclipse-based integration platform called IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua (or simply, Aqua). This means IMS documentation is provided alongside documentation for IBM products that are available through Aqua. It also means you’ll need to download and install IMS documentation as part of the documentation for IMS Enterprise Suite for Distributed Systems.
To download and install IMS documentation in a local KC, you’ll need to use IBM Installation Manager. For instructions on how to install and how to start, stop, and update your local KC and product documentation, see https://developer.ibm.com/mainframe/documentation/kc/.
Important: On the Select packages to install page of IBM Installation Manager, you need to select both IBM Explorer for z/OS Documentation and IBM IMS Enterprise Suite for Distributed Systems Documentation.
Then, continue following the instructions in IBM Installation Manager until you see the Select the features to install page. Here, you can select the IMS 15, 14, and 13 documentation for installation.
Fixes for IMS documentation in local KC
If you had previously installed IMS 14 documentation in a local KC, you might not have been able to expand the table of contents in the navigation pane. This error has been fixed in the latest release of the IMS documentation in local KC. If you continue to encounter this error, use IBM Installation Manager to uninstall, and then re-install, both your local KC and the IMS documentation.
