Learn about several new professional certificates through the IBM Developer Skills Network and strengthen your skill set

Developers of any age who are seeking to advance their skills — especially in AI — can earn several new professional certificates through the IBM Developer Skills Network.

Kautilya Katariya of Northampton, U.K., was recently granted a programming Guinness World Record at the age of 6 years and 346 days old, making him the youngest Python programmer. Courses from the IBM Developer Skills Network helped make this possible.

Leading up to his world record, Kautilya began reading IBM’s course materials to help him understand computer programming and Python language concepts. Due to COVID-19’s impact and the need to stay at home, taking the courses was one way that Kautilya, with his parents’ support, was able to spend time learning new skills.

Kautilya received five certifications in Python and AI from IBM in November 2020. He completed IBM’s Foundations of AI professional certification on edX and the Python for Data Science course from IBM Cognitive Class.

Tanmay Bakshi’s path to becoming IBM’s Student on Call Developer Advocate

Another kid who used IBM’s resources to learn about tech is Tanmay Bakshi. You may have seen his TED Talk or watched one of his informational DevOps videos, but did you know Tanmay is also IBM’s Student on Call Developer Advocate?

Even though he’s only in high school, Tanmay spends 20 hours a week working at IBM. He is a co-instructor in one of the courses within the IBM AI Professional Certificate program.

Tanmay started his journey as a developer by coding at the age of 5. His love of computer science has led him to become an AI expert. He has created multiple apps and even published a book called Hello Swift!: iOS app programming for kids and other beginners.

IBM helped connect Kautilya with Tanmay and they plan to have a mentorship call to discuss how Kautilya can keep building new developer skills.

The global impact of the IBM Developer Skills Network

Tanmay’s manager at IBM, Antonio Cangiano, has seen global momentum when it comes to developer skill development, especially in AI and ever since IBM Watson beat Ken Jennings in Jeopardy! in 2011.

Recently, one of IBM’s partners in the Ukraine, Intela Education, introduced Antonio and IBM to a system of elite schools in Uzbekistan. Antonio led a virtual workshop with 300 students in December and in eight hours, all of the students were able to complete IBM’s AI chatbot course using Watson Assistant, while registering for IBM Cloud.

Start building DevOps skills in AI today

Here are some links and descriptions to IBM’s developer courses, where you can get started today, no matter your age or skill level:

  • Coursera: IBM AI Foundations for Business Specialization — This specialization explains and describes the overall focus areas for business leaders considering AI-based solutions for business challenges. The first course provides a business-oriented summary of technologies and basic concepts in AI. The second introduces technologies and concepts in data science. The third introduces the AI Ladder, which is a framework for understanding the work and processes necessary for the successful deployment of AI-based solutions.
  • Coursera: IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate — This six-course professional certificate is designed to equip you with the tools you need to succeed in your career as an AI or ML engineer. You’ll master fundamental concepts of machine learning and deep learning, including supervised and unsupervised learning, using programming languages like Python. You’ll apply popular machine learning and deep learning libraries such as SciPy, ScikitLearn, Keras, PyTorch, and Tensorflow to industry problems involving object recognition, computer vision, image and video processing, text analytics, natural language processing, recommender systems, and other types of classifiers.
  • edX: Professional Certificate in Applied AI — Build and train custom image classifiers using Watson, Python and OpenCV; create a customer support chatbot and add it to a website; deploy speech-enabled virtual assistants with domain intelligence to Facebook, etc; explore concepts like machine learning, deep learning and neural networks.
  • edX: Professional Certificate in Deep Learning — Learn fundamental concepts of deep learning, including various neural networks for supervised and unsupervised learning; build, train, and deploy different types of deep architectures, including convolutional networks, recurrent networks, and auto-encoders; application of deep learning to real-world scenarios such as object recognition and computer vision, image and video processing, text analytics, natural language processing, recommender systems, and other types of classifiers.
