IBM watsonx Orchestrate is built upon the idea of skills, which are repetitive tasks that can be automated through digital labor. Skills can be as simple as adding a row to a table or as complex as sending emails to a specific set of contacts obtained from a merge-sort table creation. While watsonx Orchestrate comes with a few pre-built skills, users can also create custom skills either completely from scratch or from pre-configured templates that allow grouping simple skills together into a flow through a no-code interface.
Using IBM watsonx Orchestrate, builders are the developers who build the skills, combine the skills into skill flows, and publishes skills to the skills catalog. Then, users consume the skills in the skills catalog to do their jobs. Administrators monitor the skills and perform analytics on your data.

While the orchestration of skills and custom built automations are at the heart of IBM watsonx Orchestrate, watsonx Orchestrate uses its AI-driven orchestration capability to seamlessly connect you with various applications and automations, which provides smooth integrations across platforms such as Salesforce, Workday, Outlook, Gmail, and many others to accomplish tasks. Once skills are published to the skills catalog, AI-based orchestration uses those skills to fulfill users' intended tasks.
IBM watsonx Orchestrate has these major components:
Assistant Builder. With the Assistant Builder, users can design and create a self-service chat assistant using a user-friendly no-code interface. The Assistant Builder uses natural language understanding to manage ambiguous conversations to help users navigate complex digital experiences without difficulty. The Assistant Builder includes nearly all of the watsonx Assistant actions-based experience on IBM Cloud, and watsonx Orchestrate will continue to include more over time.
Skills Catalog and Skill Builder. The Skills Catalog is a comprehensive repository of pre-built skills either discovered or imported. Builders can use the Skill Builder to create composite skills or skill flows. And, if you connect the Cloud Pak for Business Automation environment to watsonx Orchestrate, its automations can be discovered and included in the Skills Catalog. Lastly, developers can include 3rd-party APIs (following the Open API standard) as skills into the Skills Catalog.
Automation Builder. Users can use this low-code tool to create decisions and automation workflows using the Automation Builder. Once these automations are built, tested, and published, they can further refine them in the Skill Builder and, ultimately, publish them as a skill in the Skills Catalog.
