Modernizing applications to use IBM WebSphere Liberty

Overview

Enterprise Java powers some of the world's most critical workloads and most large organizations are sitting on hundreds, sometimes thousands, of legacy Java applications. Keeping that estate current and secure is costly. Modernizing it at scale is even harder.

This learning path gives architects and developers a structured, repeatable approach to tackling that challenge using IBM's application modernization tools: IBM Application Modernization Accelerator (AMA) and AMA Developer Tools. With the help of these tools, you can easily modernize your enterprise Java applications to run on Liberty, whether on virtual machines or in containers in the cloud.

Your modernization journey comprises the following four phases:

  1. Discover. Build a complete inventory of your application estate: Java SDK versions, application servers, enterprise Java frameworks, shared libraries, and source code availability.
  2. Assess. Understand the complexity and cost of modernization for each application, including upgrades to Java SE and enterprise Java framework versions, application servers, and shared libraries and dependencies. Map inter-application and backing service relationships.
  3. Plan.
  4. Execute. Make the necessary code changes. Use automation and AI-assisted tools to accelerate and scale delivery without sacrificing reliability or repeatability.

IBM WebSphere Liberty (built from open-source project Open Liberty) is a modern, modular Java application runtime that can run anywhere, from virtual machines in a data center to containers in the cloud. AMA and AMA Developer Tools are IBM tools that accelerate every phase of the journey, from discovery and assessment of your application estate through to developer-level code changes.
